This fort, built in 1649, sits right on the channel into the harbor at Cojimar, Cuba. I painted a small study on location, then completed this larger painting in the studio, after several re-workings. It was a moving place to paint, listening to the guitars and singing of local talent and smelling the salt air and the warm stones.

Hooper’s Island is gradually disappearing into the Chesapeake Bay, and taking with it a long history of Bay culture. This painting is based on a study painted at this magical place. While I was painting, a flock of glossy ibises flew over, a rare sight here. For me, this painting tells many stories of what’s happening around us.

This painting has been in the works for many years, inspired by a month of traveling around India long ago. This oarsman on the Ganges River rowed me around at sunrise while I did some watercolor sketching in the boat, dipping my brush in the river for water. The Ganges is a holy river, a source of solace, a final resting place, a beautiful escape, a place of commerce and tourism….many things to many people.

This was painted from the shores of Bowman Lake during a family trip to Glacier National Park. What an overwhelmingly grand landscape, so inspiring.

Painted in the woods of a Tuscan park on a very hot summer day. Something about the long history of nature and civilization blending in this park appealed to me.

Yet another lovely late afternoon painting on the beach. Time is limited while working en plein air (everything is constantly changing), but I love capturing the subtle shifts in light and color, and the energy and sparkle of the water. All while barefoot in the sand with birds flying around me.
